Letter: Why are COVID-19 rules so different at these Burnaby schools?

A Burnaby parent says the rules are different depending on the school

I am a father of two kids who go to Cariboo Hill and Second Street Community schools. I am also a friend of a couple whose child goes to Brantford French Immersion school.

In all these three schools, the rules around COVID 19-related procedures are strikingly different. For example, at Second Street, kids wear masks during classes and cannot touch sports inventory, which is not the case in both Cariboo Hill and Brantford.

Conversely, in Brantford there's a so-called bubble, which for some reason is not formed at Second Street. In Brantford, there's a checklist every day, but there's none at the Second Street school. There are no masks during classes at Cariboo Hill. These are just some of the differences.

The questions that I have are:

  1. Why on Earth are the rules so different within the same school district?
  2. If some rules are better, should they not be applied to all the schools within the district, if not the health district or the province?
  3. Who is responsible for administering rules in these schools? Is it the district, the school, the teacher, the kids?

If the district, the Ministry of Education or whoever cannot institute common rules that would apply to all of the schools during a pandemic, I am not sure I should trust these people. To me this seems extremely substandard and unprofessional.
