Editor: Like many others residents of the Lower Mainland, I am becoming extremely concerned with the amount of aggressive and reckless drivers on the streets. In the last month alone, I have been a victim of road rage, tailgating, stunt driving and have also witnessed the same happening to others.
I have been driving for over 20 years and have not felt so scared and unsafe to drive up until very recently. It’s like I woke up one morning and everyone has forgotten their road sense. Something needs to be done immediately to address this growing problem, otherwise there is going to be a huge increase in the number of innocent injuries and casualties at the hands of these aggressive drivers.
I was waiting to make a left turn into my driveway when I noticed the driver behind become increasingly impatient and irate. I think he was literally waiting a minute, and he started yelling at me, and I couldn’t believe it, but he opened his car door to approach while we were on the street in traffic.
Thankfully, at the same moment, I was able to make my left turn and he decided to get back in his car and drive away.
But I was shaking thinking and wondering what he would have done if I was still waiting to make my left turn. Would have tried to break my windows and attack me? Seriously? Yes, I think so.
Furthermore, at 10 p.m. one night I was taking a shower and heard a crashing sound and my house shook.
I came running out thinking someone broke into my house, but quickly realized a car flipped over on the street in front of my house. How and why? Because the driver was speeding well over a 100 km/h.
I could go on with examples. But please, something needs to be done. More attention needs to be paid to this matter as it’s not just an issue in Burnaby, but all over the Lower Mainland. I have two young kids, I don’t want to confine them to being home all the time because I am afraid driving with them and risking them becoming injured at the hands of an aggressive driver.
