Dear Editor:
To those of us with sensitive ears, it’s really pretty obvious why Simon Fraser University professor Holly Andersen started the petition to ban “The Clan” as the name of its varsity football team.
SFU has a world-famous bagpipe band, and the highly-educated professor realizes that it is debatable if the pipes are a musical instrument or an instrument of torture.
So, to maintain a level playing field in the National Collegiate Athletic Association, it would be most unsportsmanlike and an unfair advantage for the SFU Clan to wear kilts and blow bagpipes under the obligatory Ku Klux Klan robes that the professor apparently assumes to be normal football attire.
