Dear Editor
I live on Capitol Hill and, in recent years, Burnaby has installed 40 km/h speed signs on the hill, due to the shortness of streets, no sidewalks, ditches and the limited vision on the hill due to the numerous winding roads.
It is not a safe place for pedestrians, but the lower speed limit did remind motorists to slow down.
I called the city to advise them that the sign at the intersection of Sea Avenue and Capital Drive was missing, and I was advised it is the city’s intention to remove the 40 km/h signs from the hill. Not only is this a waste of taxpayers’ money already spent, increasing the speed limit to 50 km is a danger to pedestrians walking on the roadway, for lack of a sidewalk to walk on. It makes more sense to leave the signs and encourage the RCMP to do random speed checks.
It’s like a freeway on the hill during rush hour from commuters cutting through the hill in order to miss the traffic on Hastings Street.
