Dear Editor: Re: New development benefits cityBurnaby NOW, April 27.

In his speech to the Burnaby Board of Trade, Mayor Derek Corrigan refers to the proposed construction of affordable housing units, but I am betting that once constructed, none if these units will be affordable, particularly for the many families who were displaced by renovictions.

I read an article not too long ago where Burnaby businesses are able to attract potential employees, but retention has become a real problem because their employees cannot afford to live in Burnaby because of the insane housing costs, and it’s not getting any better.

Truth be told, even people making above minimum wage cannot afford to live in Burnaby because of the costs associated with high rents.

Somehow this situation needs to corrected, before we wind up with a city where only the wealthy can afford to reside.
