Dear Editor:
Several neighbours suggested to me that Burnaby council have a fixed two-term maximum for all elected individuals.
By having such a term, it would ensure new voices, fresh blood in council and quite emphatically give a broader voice to an “open” democracy.
It could remove the “slate” mentality and massive phone banks that give a political party clout each time an election is on the local horizon.
Greater input, promotion of a fairer individual ability to be elected would result.
The stalemate of one-party domination of council would be averted and a balanced, democratic image be actively encouraged.
Stale, tired opinions would cease, replaced by varied, non-politically-motivated individuals; this would promote a vibrant, free-thinking council for all sectors of our great city.
