Dear Editor:
Re: B.C. government is right on pipeline expansion, Letters to the editor, Burnaby NOW, Feb. 7.
So, here we have another fearmongering person in our midst. We have lived in the same place – within “spitting” distance of Kinder Morgan, Imperial Oil and Shell – for over 44 years and it does not bother us, and I believe it doesn’t bother most residents of the area.
The writer says it is only a matter of time when – not if – there is an accident with the pipeline or a tanker and that we are prepared to clean the problem.
I would like to remind her that the skies over the Lower Mainland are the same area that they were 50 years ago but there are considerably more planes and passengers flying now; is she not concerned that there will be, not may be, a collision of planes above us? Are we prepared with sufficient response vehicles to help with an incident like that?
Safety standards for pipelines, tankers, planes, etc. are far better than they were 50-plus years ago. Let’s get on with the job of building the pipeline.
