Dear Editor:

Re: Alberta boycotts B.C. wine in pipeline dispute, Burnaby NOW online, Feb. 7.

Now that Alberta has taken another step to protect its interests, howls of rage are already swamping social media and news sources in B.C.

Give your head a shake, people. What did you expect Alberta to do? Roll over and beg for more?

The B.C. NDP and Burnaby’s city council have clearly stated their opposition to any expansion of any oil pipelines.

The Green rump steering John Horgan and the provincial NDP have clearly stated they would like to see a halt to all uses of petroleum products – as if that were even possible.

The fact is that under the Canadian Constitution this is a federal issue and there is little that the province and especially the City of Burnaby can do if they don’t like the decisions made by the feds.

Instead of offering constructive input from the start, the NDP (both provincially and locally) and the Greens have attempted silly obstructionist tactics to prevent any action on this file.

Alberta has decided enough is enough and retaliated. I am surprised they did not do so earlier.

Pipeline safety is a legitimate concern that should be addressed and improved upon. The way to achieve this is through proper input to the National Energy Board and the creation of appropriate regulations and other safety measures. Creating silly and futile obstacles to any realistic resolution of concerns is not the way to go.

The Province of B.C., represented at this point by the NDP and their Green masters, and the City of Burnaby would get further trying to hold their collective breath until they turn blue than through silly obstructionism.
