Dear Editor:

Re: ‘We’re going to live with it - Mayor,’ Burnaby NOW, Nov. 3. Perhaps it’s just the way it was written, but in the article noting that corporate, union and out-of-province donations would be prohibited in future municipal elections, the article stated: “The mayor said one thing that’s missing from the legislation is a tax deductibility incentive. Without one, Corrigan noted it’ll be hard to raise money through individual contributions when the giver is not getting anything in return.”

Does this imply that in the past our elected members of council were giving corporations and unions something in return for their support to the Burnaby Citizens Association? Sounds like to me? Maybe that’s why highrises that allow low-cost housing to be torn down are allowed in Burnaby while laneway homes aren’t. Both increase living density, but then again, individual homeowners don’t have as much to gain from donating to the BCA as corporations do!

This legislation is long overdue!
