LETTERS: ‘Problem’ black bear didn’t deserve to die

Dear Editor: The killing of the black bear by the so-called “conservation officer” was immoral. Raccoons exhibit the exact same “problem behaviour,” but we do not go about killing all of them.

Dear Editor:

The killing of the black bear by the so-called “conservation officer” was immoral.

Raccoons exhibit the exact same “problem behaviour,” but we do not go about killing all of them.

It makes me feel profoundly ashamed to be a human being, when I consider that it had climbed a tree, was harmless and, up to that point, had only wished to feed itself, when our public servant, on our behalf, decided to kill it.

Mahatma Gandhi once wrote, “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” It’s true, and we should all be ashamed.

It does not matter if it would travel back to us, we had no right to just kill it. Morality should precede convenience. It was not threatening anyone!
