Dear Editor
On behalf of the Burnaby Glens District, Girl Guides of Canada, I want to thank the Burnaby NOW and Jennifer Moreau for helping us to let people know about the Nov. 28 Holly Tea and Fair. The numerous inclusions on the events calendar contributed to the excellent attendance and consequent success.
We are very happy that the proceeds will help us to offset the cost of taking city girls to Camp Olave on the Sunshine Coast, where they can experience the forest and ocean environments. We don’t want to leave any girl behind because her family cannot afford to send her.
The Holly Tea and Fair is not only a fundraiser; it is part of the history of South Burnaby. When it began in 1953, it was called the Guide Bazaar. Ever since that time it has been an important community event where neighbours and past and current Guiding members gather in friendship to reminisce and to celebrate a movement that enriches the lives of girls and women.
In preparing for the Holly Tea, girls learn planning and crafting skills. During the event, they assist by manning stations, doing set-up and clean-up, serving guests and handling money. They enjoy these responsibilities and gain confidence.
Thank you for being a part of a good news story for today’s youth.
Margaret Stevens, Holly Tea coordinator
