Dear Editor:
This morning I heard Dr. David Suzuki chastising Dr. Andrew Weaver for not bringing down the B.C. N.D.P. government over their decision to continue the Site C dam project.
When it comes to the natural sciences Dr. Suzuki is brilliant; the social sciences, not so much.
Let’s try just a modicum of foresight. The B.C. Green Party brings down the current government and we return to the polls for another “first-past-the-post” election. Will the B.C. Green Party win the election? Unlikely. Will the N.D.P. win? Maybe. Will the B.C. Liberals win? Maybe. A couple of things are sure. The work will continue on the Site C dam (just as it has since the NDP took office which rather gives the lie to the notion they ever seriously considered stopping it) to the tune of $15 million a month and, whichever party forms government will continue the project.
If we want an end to ideological based governance, where the B.C. Liberals are the party of Big Business and the NDP are the party of Big Union, then we need electoral reform in this province. When parties have to collaborate to govern then we’ll have a hope of fact and reason based governance.
In the meantime we now have our very own Muskrat Falls project which we will be paying for in the decades to come. Where will B.C. Hydro sell that cheap power now that the natural gas boom has gone bust? When I look at a map, the closest project that is a major power consumer and is looking to expand appears to be the Alberta tar sands.
