Dear Editor
We refer to Janaya Fuller-Evans’ column No more silence on human rights, printed in the Friday, July 10 edition of Burnaby NOW.
The title caught our eye, because we too feel deeply about that subject. Many people around our world are persecuted, harassed and denied their basic human rights for many illegitimate reasons.
However, on reading her letter, we felt the title was wrong. We agree we should give all people their basic human rights, but marriage between people of the same gender is not a human rights issue but a moral one. Many people feel that marriage cannot be re-defined by any generation. Marriage from the beginning of time, as ordained by the Creator God, is between a man and a woman.
Whereas, it’s absolutely essential that people of all races, genders and religions should be given their basic human rights, and we should stand up for that. The issue of marriage and what it is, is a different issue, and should not be confused with basic human rights.
Thank you for your paper, which we always enjoy reading.
