Dear Editor:

I'm pleased to see that B.C.'s vitally important mining industry is garnering some well-deserved attention this election year. Mining is one of the bedrock industries that B.C. is built on and it has contributed greatly to our prosperity.

Without the revenue mining generates for the province, we would have far less to spend on schools and hospitals and on the many other services and benefits we expect as citizens.

The mining operations of today are also light years ahead of the pick and shovel mines of a century ago.

With modern technologies and standards, mining is safer, more high-tech, and more environmentally benign than at any other time in our province's history. And the jobs created by mining are among the best paying jobs one can imagine.

That's why it would be a monumental shame if the mining industry in this province was ever sidelined as it has been at times in the past. Much is riding on having a thriving mining industry in this province, so the more people who become informed about mining's essential role in B.C.'s economy the better.
