More consultation needed on gondola proposal

Dear Editor

Re: MP's survey was flawed, Letters to the editor, Burnaby NOW, Nov. 9

I'd like to thank Derek Wilson for taking the time to comment on my survey regarding TransLink's proposal to build a gondola from Production Way SkyTrain Station to SFU.

The survey shows 47 per cent of the 1,023 people who took part supported the gondola, 39 per cent opposed it, and 14 per cent were undecided.

The purpose of this telephone survey was to increase awareness and community dialogue, and it comprised just one component of my overall efforts concerning this issue.

I have directly heard from many residents who are concerned about the project's costs and its environmental and social impacts.

I think we both agree that much more consultation is required on this issue and that the project should not go ahead unless TransLink strikes a compromise with the community and clearly demonstrates how it would alleviate the concerns of local residents and businesses.

I have personally brought these concerns to TransLink, and they have informed me that a revised business case will be presented shortly.

I am also writing a report outlining the results of my consultations, which will be delivered to all households in Burnaby-Douglas.
