Dear Editor,
I recently spent a few hours at Fraser Foreshore Park during the hot weather to enjoy the outdoors and the cool breeze that comes off the water.
I was shocked to see not one or two but three different groups with portable gas barbecues sitting on the grass as they cooked their meals. Don’t get me wrong, I love my barbecue as well, but I’m wondering if common sense has completely left some of us.
There is currently a ban on charcoal barbecues and smoking in Burnaby parks but no restrictions on gas/propane barbecues. What would compel someone to put their barbecueson the tinder dry brown grass and light it? The flames would be inches from the ground with a table-top barbecue and most certainly a serious fire hazard. Let’s all use a little common sense with respect to things like this. Just because they aren’t banned doesn’t mean there is no danger to use them.
