Not right to destroy children’s future

Dear Editor

Mayor Corrigan has stated he is willing to be arrested to protest the expansion of the Kinder Morgan pipeline. He thereby risks his position as mayor and a lawyer.

His commitment is admirable as the triple expansion will be an unacceptable risk to the entire Burrard Inlet from Point Grey to the Wigwam Inn.

On April 8, there was a small leak of 2,700 liters leakage from a freighter off Kitsilano beach which amounts to 94 barrels of oil but it took the Coast Guard three hours to respond and caused considerable damage to wildlife, sea life and the shoreline.

Modern freighters carry 1 to 2 million barrels of oil. When, not if, an accident happens, the entire Burrard Inlet will be coated with oil as thick as 10-15 centimetres of oil. All sea life will be killed, and wildlife and humans will suffer catastrophic health problem.

Only then will we realize that we cannot eat money or buy good health. We have no right to destroy our children’s quality of life.
