Opinion: Burnaby cops nail speed demons exploiting empty roads

The COVID-19 pandemic has emptied out roads like nothing Burnaby has ever seen. With the vast majority of Metro Vancouver residents either laid off or working from home, there is no such thing as the working week “rush hour.

The COVID-19 pandemic has emptied out roads like nothing Burnaby has ever seen.

With the vast majority of Metro Vancouver residents either laid off or working from home, there is no such thing as the working week “rush hour.”

Oh, but some reckless drivers are definitely still rushing, according to Burnaby RCMP.

The traffic enforcement team on Thursday nailed five excessive speeders – those going double-digit kilometres per hour over the posted speed limit.

Burnaby RCMP called them “aggressive and dangerous” drivers. Those drivers receive a ticket of at least $368 and get their vehicle towed.

One was a taxi driver. Another didn’t even have a driver’s licence, and one L driver didn’t have a supervisor in the vehicle. Three distracted drivers were also caught.

“We wish to remind motorists who travel on @cityofburnaby roadways that though the roads may be quieter, you must still follow the rules of the road,” read a Burnaby RCMP tweet. “Our Traffic Teams are actively patrolling to keep our roadways safe.”

It’s not just Burnaby, of course. Some drivers are taking advantage of the extra space on the road to push the accelerator a little harder than normal, said Coquitlam Cpl. Michael McLaughlin.

“Anecdotally, we have observed that some people are taking advantage of reduced traffic volumes to speed more,” he said, noting enforcement statistics are backing up what police are seeing on the roads.

Drivers, just enjoy not being stuck in rush hour traffic. Luxuriate in the extra time you save. Just don’t speed up.
