Opinion: Burnaby food app driver nailed for being a maniac

The COVID-19 pandemic has more people ordering meals through food apps. And, yes, we want that food delivered quickly so it’s hot and as fresh as possible. But that doesn’t give delivery drivers through these apps permission to drive like maniacs.

Yes, I said maniacs because Burnaby RCMP caught one of them driving like this on Saturday.

Police stopped a driver who was delivering food (they didn't name the food company) on Burnaby Mountain doing an insane 132 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on Gaglardi Way – going uphill.

Yes, uphill.

Even on Highway 1 that’s a crazy speed, let alone on a residential street.

This driver is in deep now because they received a $483 ticket for excessive speeding and had their vehicle impounded for seven days.

Good luck trying to recoup that lost revenue for driving like an idiot and putting lives at risk.

The pandemic has put more of these food app drivers on Burnaby roads – hopefully these other drivers follow the rules of the road better than this loon.

This wasn’t even the only egregious speeder on Burnaby Mountain on Saturday.

RCMP traffic enforcement officers also nailed a driver going down the mountain at a speed of 124 km/h in a 60 km/h zone – yes, that’s twice the limit. Notice the 'N' sticker. Burnaby RCMP

Oh, and it was an ‘N’ driver who was caught and received a $483 ticket and had their vehicle impounded for seven days. Shouldn't 'N' drivers lose their licence, or at least have to go back to an 'L' after being caught excessive speeding.

I’m looking forward to the usual suspects whining to me about how speed limits are too low. I get emails from these dudes - it's always dudes - saying the speed limits are unfair and how they force people to speed.

I'm up for a debate about road speeds, but these two weren't a little over the speed limit - they were doing freeway speeds on residential roads.

Slow down people.

Life is risky enough during a pandemic without having to worry about maniacal drivers.
