A few months ago, I wrote this in a column:
“Rule No. 1 when you’re expressing an opinion should probably be “don’t ever compare something with Nazis and the Holocaust.” That’s because whatever your comparison is, it will likely be in no way related to what happened during the Holocaust. It will also be insulting to the memories of those who died in that genocidal madness.”
That still hasn’t changed, but even more dumb dudes are saying it.
The latest comes from two guys (why is it also guys?) writing in response to my columns about masks.
“I bet you would've enjoyed being a Nazi wanting to force everyone to conform or be sent to concentration camps to be re-educated in the new normal,” Brad wrote.
It’s just a terrible opinion and also gets history wrong. Nazis didn’t send people to concentration camps to be “re-educated” – they sent them there to be murdered.
Now comes “Dad in Burnaby” with a letter about how “unfairly” his son has been treated at the local rink and at school.
Basically, the letter says his son was targeted for not wearing a mask in places he was supposed to, despite clear rules that have been issued to every single Burnaby student.
He whines about how his son was told to leave a Burnaby arena and brought into the principal’s office for violating the rules.
“Dad in Burnaby” doesn’t deny that his son violated the rules, but says these rules are unfair.
Based on how “Dad in Burnaby” defends his son, it’s obvious why the son doesn’t follow the rules. Kids sometimes listen to their parents, even when the parents give them terrible advice. (I see a bright future of this boy getting fired from jobs for being an annoying contrarian about everything.)
But “Dad in Burnaby” also makes repeated references to Nazi Germany in relation to these rules. And once again, I say there is absolutely no connection and if you say there is you’re are being wilfully ignorant.
“Dad in Burnaby” should be ashamed of himself and the damage he’s doing to his son for putting these ridiculous ideas in his head.
If you don’t want your child to follow COVID-19 health rules then keep your child at home.
Don’t make them out to be martyrs.
