Opinion: Quit yelling at Burnaby servers for asking you to still wear a mask

A few businesses still require masks and some are getting grief for it.

Some anti-maskers haven’t seemed to grasp the concept that just because Dr. Bonnie Henry wrongly lifted the face mask mandate, it doesn’t mean people won’t still mask up or that some businesses will require them.

Business have the right to set rules for their customers to follow. Remember “no shirt, no shoes no service”?

Well, there are still a few businesses that are requiring customers to wear masks, including some restaurants that want you to wear a mask when you’re not sitting at your table.

Since masks were lifted as an official mandate, I’ve been to a few restaurants. I respect the ones that don’t require masks because it's no longer a rule, but if I see one that still does, they will likely see more of my business.

I chatted with a server at one of these businesses and she said there has been some blowback on them from customers who get mad if they are told they must still wear a mask.

“They get quite rude,” she said. "One man yelled at me and then didn't tip."

I’ve seen other workers post on social media about the same thing.

Look, I get that many people no longer want to wear a mask, but if you’re asked to, don’t get mad at the staff. They are just following management’s policy. If you don’t like it, you can always just suck it up and follow the policy. Or take your business elsewhere.

It’s been interesting to see businesses predicting that the number of customers will go up significantly with the lifting of mandates. Many people I know say they are now more nervous about being in public indoor spaces.

We’ll see. Businesses have suffered a lot in the past two years. I hope my fear of a sixth wave doesn’t come true. I’ll be happy to be wrong about that.

In the meantime, please be kind to servers and store staff. They’ve been through more grief than most of us.
