Opinion: Someone added music to the Burnaby salute and now I’m blubbering

Burnaby Hospital, COVID
Front-line health-care workers at Burnaby Hospital respond to a salute from police, firefighters and paramedics Wednesday in a screen grab from a video posted on social media.

I’ve been tearing up a lot lately.

That’s not a big surprise because despite my acerbic writing style, I’m kind of a big mush ball. I used to only cry at animal videos and when the Red Sox win the World Series, but I’ve expanded that criteria over the years to also include my daughter’s graduation, the new Little Women movie and all deaths of my musical heroes (David Bowie, Prince, etc.).

Now, of course, COVID-19 has exploded the dam with dynamite and I find myself tearing up every few days as this pandemic continues to get worse.

Not all of the tears are from sadness and terror – some are tears of joy connected to that sadness and terror.

Like the 7 p.m. nightly cheer for front-line health workers who are risking their lives.

The cheer echoes from my balcony each night on Burnaby Mountain and it’s emotional.

Now someone has taken those cheers and salutes and put them to music. Check out the tweet embedded in this post by Silvester Law that shows fire truck and police vehicles roaring by Burnaby Hospital as workers pour out into the lane to accept much-deserved praise.

It’s something to behold and is getting me through another day.
