Opinion: Stop bullying your way onto Burnaby SkyTrain. Let people off first

Why can't people wait for others to get off first?

I took my first trip on SkyTrain in Burnaby in a long time.

It might be a long time until I ride it again. That’s because of the painful experience I had riding it.

It was hard to decide to ride SkyTrain again because the idea of getting on a crowded train full of people who could have COVID-19 – even though I’m triple-vaxxed – was not very appetizing.

But my car was getting serviced and so transit was the best option. Two things were bad during my Skytrain trip, which kicked off from the Production Way station.

The first was the fact that there were several people who decided to ignore the mandate by not wearing a face mask. One dude was using having a bottle of water as his excuse, even though he only took two sips in about 20 minutes.

Others just didn’t give a crap and were sitting there without even a mask around their chins. I still can’t figure out how pathetic some people are about following very basic rules. I mean they can’t even do the bare minimum to protect themselves and others. They’re just too precious.

But the second thing that was really terrible to watch was just how rude people are when they are waiting to get onto the SkyTrain.

Trains would pull up and people would be waiting to get off the train. The people outside need to let people get off before trying to get on but I kept seeing people bullying their way – I guess in a quest to get a seat.

It was ridiculous. Poor seniors were getting pushed aside by these clowns forcing their way on like they were John Wick going after a kill.

It’s basic etiquette. Do you bull-rush your way onto an elevator? No, of course you don’t. So why do this on SkyTrain.

Relax. Take a breath. Show some class.

Society demands this.
