I wrote recently about a new kind of litterbug – those who toss their dirty face masks and rubber or plastic gloves (person protective equipment) on the ground because I guess it’s less scary to do that than find a trash can.
In response, I received a letter from Mahmood about how his Edmonds neighbourhood is plagued with this new trend.
“I would like to bring your attention to a serious issue. It’s about used gloves and masks dropped everywhere near the Edmonds Community Centre. I am sending pictures from a 10-minute walk from my place to a grocery store. I found dozens of them everywhere and I think the City of Burnaby should come up with some sort of (stiffer) fine or fee because residents here are not serious about maintaining cleanliness in this difficult time, especially with COVID-19 everywhere.”

I get that people are afraid to touch their masks and gloves too much, but tossing it on the ground so someone else has to deal with the risks is terrible behaviour and irresponsible.
It’s not just litter – it’s literally a danger to other people.
Just stop doing it. Carry something that you can use to remove the masks and gloves safely and then find a trash can.
Just make an extra effort.
Just stop being a bad person.
