OUR VIEW: Traditions – they’re all about the love

Let’s just put aside the usual editorial this year. You know the one. The rant against the commercialization of Christmas. Or the other one. The call for a kinder, gentler, holiday season.

Let’s just put aside the usual editorial this year. You know the one. The rant against the commercialization of Christmas. Or the other one. The call for a kinder, gentler, holiday season. One where folks think of others before thinking of themselves.

Instead, let’s just face the truth about Christmas and Thanksgiving, birthdays and weddings – heck any celebration for any reason whatsoever.

They are really all just an excuse to show people that we love them. That we care about them. That our lives would be much emptier places without the people around us. The people we are related to, the people we share our lives and passions with, the people who have our back at work, the people who give a damn about us.

We are not the only pundits who have noticed this, of that we’re sure. But it never hurts to say it all again and again. Love – or even a whole bunch of like – is what it’s all about.

Our feature on Christmas Eve traditions underlines that point.

You can have the most elaborate tradition – festooned with every symbol of the season – or you can simply get together, make some popcorn and watch a movie. Or plan the turkey dinner. It’s the sharing of special time with people you love that makes a tradition worth doing and remembering.

Do you and yours have a special Christmas Eve tradition? If you’re a single person alone in a new home, new city, new country, are you remembering with fondness gatherings in your past? Whether you’re spending time with loved ones doing something special, or hoping to make new friends and create new traditions and shared events, we here at the BurnabyNOW wish you all the best!

Stay safe and warm and enjoy the holidays!
