Privatizing has never been good for taxpayers

Dear Editor:

Re: Principals’ book bound to be biased, Letters to the editor, Burnaby NOW, Sept. 9 edition.

I find it odd that Larry Bennett would give credence to the Fraser Institute’s constant attacks on every service delivered with public funds, and they produce so-called unbiased reports suggesting that the private sector can do it better, and cheaper.

I know of no government service that has been privatized that delivers any service that is cheaper for the taxpayers. On top of that, fewer people are employed, at cheaper wages, so that these privately owned entities can further pad their bottom lines, while the actual costs to the taxpayer either stays the same or increases.

That’s the wonderful things for governments wanting to privatize services: they aren’t accountable to the public, because the costs for contracted services is hidden in the budgets for the department doing it, so there is no way for the public to determine how much that service is actually costing the taxpayers.

If you think a private contractor is going to reveal what they are charging, good luck with that.

Remember who the Fraser Institute and other right-wing think tanks work for, and it’s not for you and I, as they exist to promote private entities, taking over publicly funded services, so any reports they produce are biased as well.
