New Westminster’s Justin Kiedrzyn won two events and helped Simon Fraser University collect two other events at a dual meet with the University of Victoria on Sunday.
The senior freestylist captured the 50-metre freestyle and 100m butterfly events, in 23.58 seconds and 56.17, respectively. As part of a four-man crew, Kiedryzn won the 200- and 400m freestyle relay races.
It was a strong showing for SFU, which out-pointed UVic 145-104 in the men’s events, and 165-87 in women’s.
Pacing the Clan were sophomore Adrian VanderHelm, who anchored the men’s 400m free relay win, and topped three individual races: the 100 and 200m free, and 200 individual medley. His time in the 200m free, 1:49.04, established a new SFU dual meet record.
He reached NCAA Div. II ‘A’ standard times in three events to earn an automatic berth to the national championships in March in Indianapolis.
“Adrian swam really well and it is almost not surprising but you don’t expect performances like this at this time of year with the level of training and fatigue we are going through,” said Clan head coach Liam Donnelly.
On the women’s side, Lauren Swistak of Port Moody picked up a pair of first-place results to go along with the 200 and 400m free relay events she played a part in.
The sophomore won the 200m butterfly with the fifth fastest time in NCAA Div. II competition (2:15.38), as well as the 100m fly.
Also collecting two victories each were senior Carly Guraliuk, who took both the 100 and 200m backstroke events, and Robyn Lee, with victories in the 100 and 200m free.
UVic’s Sarah Galbraith registered top swims in the women’s 50m free, 100m breaststroke and 200m IM.
A day earlier, SFU handily trounced the University of Puget Sound.
