Think local, buy local, and spread the word

We've said it before, and we'll say it again: Buy local - it makes sense. We're reminded of that again today as we publish our 17th annual Best of Burnaby section.

We've said it before, and we'll say it again: Buy local - it makes sense.

We're reminded of that again today as we publish our 17th annual Best of Burnaby section. The section highlights local businesses, groups and people who have been chosen by our readers in Burnaby.

If you drive around the city, you'll see banners on storefronts declaring, "Burnaby's favourite . - 12 years in a row" or our award plaques posted proudly in every place from res-

taurant lobbies to veterinary offices.

There's nothing like having your customers telling you year after year that you make their life easier by providing consistently quality service. And there's nothing like being a customer who walks into a restaurant and the owner greets you by name and remembers that you like your favourite dish with-the peppers. It's a good combination.

But beyond the boasting power of these awards, there's the power of com-munity visible in them. The owners of local businesses are usually behind the counter, and their kids are often in the neighbourhood school. Local businesses often buy local products and depend on other local businesses for help. Local businesses also support local events, sports teams and charities. In fact, one study suggests that local businesses give 250 per cent more to local causes than big corporations. As well, buying local keeps four times the money in the local economy compared to shopping at big box stores.

Yes, we have a vested interest in buying local. We are local and our parent company started its first newspapers out of a little basement print shop in this very city 30 years ago.

But beyond that - we also deeply believe in the power of a community that recognizes how important local connections are - not only to the economic survival of small businesses, but also to the well being of its citizens.

Spread the word, buy local.
