Head to the Nikkei National Museum and Cultural Centre this weekend for the Japanese book sale and food fair. The event features more than 30,000 used titles on sale, plus an exciting lineup of craft artisans, Japanese food stands, kids’ activities and three workshops. If you didn’t have a turkey dinner last weekend, join Burnaby Neighbourhood House and Burnaby Rotaract on Sunday, Oct. 15 for a Thanksgiving feast. The meal will have all the fixings. Tickets cost $5 for adults and $3 for children ages three to 12 (kids under three get in free). The event is on from 6 to 8 p.m., but everyone is asked to arrive at 5:30 p.m. Tickets must be purchased in advance at the Burnaby Neighbourhood South House reception desk, 4460 Beresford St.

Jubilee United Church is hosting its second annual black and bling gala dinner and concert on Saturday, Oct. 14. It’s being described as “an elegant evening with a delicious, gourmet, three-course dinner.” There will be lots of entertainment, including popular classics by the Flanagans. Tickets are $25 per person and can be picked up at the church office, 7551 Gray Ave. Doors will open at 6 p.m.

Scouts across canada will be giving thanks to their community during Apple Day on Oct. 14 and 15. They’ll be handing out apples to show their appreciation to the general public for their support throughout the year. Donations are accepted in exchange for the fruit, with the money going towards Scout initiatives, camping equipment and many other endeavours. Groups will be out in Burnaby from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at various locations: Starbucks, Safeway, London Drugs, Crystal Mall and more.
