Burnaby council right to restrain pit bulls

Dear Editor Re: HugABull pit bull event goes to the (other) dogs.

I can understand HugABull members don’t want to parade their dogs with muzzles as required by law. Their agenda, despite enormous evidence to the contrary, is to show pit bulls as “family friendly”. However, based on bite statistics by breed in Burnaby, city councillors have stood firm for years on breed legislation policies, even when repeatedly contested by HugABull. Coun. Pietro Calendino says protecting public safety is their No. 1 priority.

“I’ll call it the vocal minority that’s been addressing us, writing to us… passionate about their pit bull dog,” he said. “But we have a very silent majority out there that is in support of what the council is doing and they want us to not change our mind about … restraining vicious dogs in the public.”

Meanwhile, the SPCA has its own agenda when it comes to promoting pit bulls. They are forced to re-home great numbers of pit bulls surrendered for aggression or impounded.

But the SPCA is going too far in their claim that HugABull is a responsible organization. As a result of bite reports, many HugABull members refuse to register their pit bulls as “pit bulls.” They also repeatedly insist on taking their unmuzzled dogs on parades and walks among the public in Burnaby despite muzzling bylaws. It is ridiculous to whine and complain that one person alone has a personal vendetta against them.
