What can the city do to get people to respect social distancing measures in parks? This writer has some ideas.

What can we do to educate those who use our parks, to read and accept the safe distancing signs displayed in clear sight?

People mostly ignore these cautions and continue to walk in groups of two or more, even when they see oncoming people stepping behind each other to respect the right to safe spacing.

If you ask them to respect distancing, the response is generally rude or dismissive, so one tends not to risk an unpleasant exchange and just step as far away as the path allows.

Many are oblivious to the signs and resent being reminded it’s actually a legal requirement by the city. Perhaps a notice should be added to the signs as there are on buses “Give a six-foot distance / It’s the law.”

Maybe the city could hold a contest to select the best artwork and draw attention to the issue, and produce and sell the shirts to raid funds for defeating COVID.
