A New West bylaw allows folks to have hens on their property (a maximum of 50), but certain rules must be followed.

I wanted to comment on the no chickens being allowed in a Burnaby backyard.

Chickens serve a useful function. They provide eggs for families that are fresh and may be a much needed food item for families.

I think they should be allowed in Burnaby backyards provided they have a proper coop and are fenced in. I think roosters would pose a problem due to their noise.

My grandmother had chickens in her Vancouver backyard in the Grandview district.

If people can have cats and dogs in their backyards, people should be able to have chickens as long as their coops are kept clean and they don't run loose.
