A strong Burnaby contingent is in Thunder Bay, Ont. this week to compete at the Special Olympics National Winter Games, which start today (Tuesday).

Having earned their spots on Team B.C. with good showings at the 2019 B.C. Special Olympics Winter Games, the members will now test their mettle on the national stage.

Team B.C. includes cross-country skier Natasha Sanford; curling's Alexandrea Edwards, Jennifer Fleet, Warren Harris and Darcy Stebanuk; floor hockey's Doug Birdsall; and snowshoeing's Katie Little.

For some, it's a return trip to the nationals. Stebanuk, who was part of the Burnaby-based B.C. Leprechauns who won gold at the B.C. Winter Games, it's his eighth time competing at the national Winter Games. Fellow Leprechaun Edwards has been to four nationals, while Little has competed at two previously.

Joining the athletes are coaches Mark Schnurr, for alpine skiing, Liz Little, for snowshoeing, and curling's Mike Rose.

Team B.C.'s staff includes Burnaby's Helen Cheung, who serves as team manager.

The competition concludes on Saturday.
