The 2019 BC Junior Curling championships wrapped up with the reigning World Junior champions claiming the junior men’s title with a 9-2 win over Team Colwell at Vernon Curling Club.

While both teams failed to score in the first end, skip Tyler Tardi and crew took the lead in the second end with three points.

Team Tardi, with Burnaby’s Sterling Middleton at third, maintained its lead throughout the game, with a 6-0 score after four ends. Team Colwell notched single points in the fifth and eighth ends to put something on the board in a one-sided game.

This is the fourth year in a row that Team Tardi, which includes Matthew Hall and Alex Horvath, has won the BC Junior Men’s Championship. The foursome, although featuring different players but led by Tardi and Middleton, won the 2017 and 2018 Canadian junior championships and will be targeting a third straight title, something which has never been done before.

“It means a lot. Every single one is special, it doesn’t matter if it’s your first or last, it’s always an honour to represent your province and we’re excited to go back again,” said Tardi.

“It’s obviously a thought that’s always lingering in the back of your mind, knowing it’s never been done before,” Tardi said of the possibility of winning a third Canadian Juniors. However, he and his teammates are focusing on just playing their best.

“We actually have a lot of fun out there on the ice. They’re all great shooters,” Tardi said of his teammates. “We all work really well together, we all have a lot of knowledge of the game.”

The 2019 Canadian Junior Curling Championships will be taking place in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan from January 19 to 27. BC will be represented by Team Tardi in the junior men’s competition.
