Table tennis is proving to be a strong sport for B.C. at the 2019 Canada Winter Games.

The trio of Patrina Hui (Burnaby), Benita Zhou (Vancouver) and Fiona Nie (Surrey) defeated Ontario 3-1 in the table tennis girls team final on Monday, and was followed by another medal for the boys team.

The B.C. boys, Steve Wang (North Vancouver), Kenny Jiang (Burnaby) and David Lin (Richmond), defeated Manitoba 3-0 for the bronze, after falling to Ontario in the semifinals.

Team B.C. continued its podium dominance on Thursday with a silver medal in male doubles. Jiang and Wang marched all the way to the final before falling in five games (3-2) to Quebec in a thriller at Red Deer’s Westerner Park.

“I’m upset because we had beat Team Quebec earlier this week, but we fought hard and went for it,” said Wang.

Jiang finished 5th in the male singles competition.

In female singles, Hui was defeated 3-1 by Ontario’s Ann Shiao, putting her in today’s bronze match.

In short track speed skating’s 500m main event, Sherilyn Chung (Coquitlam) finished third in her quarterfinal heat with a time of 45.968, qualifying her into the C Final. She closed out the 500m event earning top spot in the C final with a time of 47.439. Burnaby’s Ainsley Spencer placed 24th and Samantha Spencer 26th out of a total of 46 skaters in the girls’ 500m race.

Team B.C. is in today’s (Thursday’s) semfinal against Ontario in the ringette tournament.

B.C. advanced with a 4-3 quarterfinal victory over New Brunswick on Wednesday.

Netminder Kiana Heska of Surrey continued to set the tone, turning back a majority of shots and giving her team a chance to win each game.

“Today our goalie really stood on her head. She has been outstanding all tournament and she has really kept us in most of our games,” said Burnaby’s Jennifer Falloon, Team B.C. mission staff for ringette.

Team B.C.’s lineup includes Kristen Hunter and Brooke Valancius of New Westminster.
