Cliff Avenue United's technical advisor Tony Waiters has had his share of honours -- but the past few weeks have been especially grand.
The former national team and 1979 Vancouver Whitecaps coach was feted by both the Whitecaps and B.C. Sports Hall of Fame recently for his lengthy career and impact on the soccer landscape.
The former goalkeeper from Southport was inducted into B.C.'s hall, alongside skiier Emily Brydon, basketball's Darlene Currie, hockey's Ken Holland and Daniel and Henrik Sedin, football's Ray Gerela and Ralph Henderson, rugby's Kelly McCallum, horse racing's Dan Jukich, and the 1968 New Westminster Salmonbellies.
Among the multiple highlights in Waiters' career was piloting the Whitecaps to the NASL championship in '79, and guiding Canada in its first and only appearance in the World Cup in 1986, two years after the national team had secured a berth to the 1984 Olympics.
The Whitecaps honoured Waiters and members of the '79 squad last week on the 40th anniversary of the NASL championship.
The 82-year-old was part of the Burnaby club's 60th anniversary celebration two years ago.
