Grandview knots series with Sockeyes

The Grandview Steelers pulled even in their best-of-seven series at 1-1 with the Richmond Sockeyes, after Sunday's 4-1 win.

The Burnaby-based Steelers evened up their best-of-seven Pacific Junior B Hockey League quarterfinal series with the Richmond Sockeyes, skating off with a 4-1 victory at the Burnaby Winter Club.

Lucas Cox's goal just 3:33 into the second period proved to be the winner, as Grandview built up a 3-0 lead over the first 40 minutes. Also scoring for the home team were Quinn Myles, Michael Martino and Ethan Strik, the latter with a tally in the final minute.

Turning aside 25 shots for the victory was veteran Cale Dolan.

The series started off in Richmond on Wednesday, when the Sockeyes caught fire over the final 30 minutes in a 5-1 triumph.

After the hosts grabbed a lead in the first period, Martino counted his first of the postseason at 8:35 of the second period on a powerplay. Five minutes later, Craig Schouten counted his second of the day for Richmond to restore the lead and triggering a three-goal run.

The Sockeyes outshot Grandview 50-20 in the series opener.

The playoff pairing continues with Game 3 on Monday in Richmond (7:30 p.m. at Minoru Arena), and Game 4 on Wednesday, 7 p.m. at the Burnaby Winter Club. Game 5 will see the teams return to Richmond on Feb. 20, while a possible sixth game would be played Feb. 23 in Burnaby.
