The Burnaby Mountain Lions’ Isabella Brunoro didn’t let the wet weather weigh her down.

The junior division runner stayed within striking distance of first place most of the race before finishing eighth at last week’s B.C. High School cross country championships in Nanaimo.

A runner with the Royal City Track and Field club, Brunoro completed the junior division race in 16:22 minutes, 52 seconds behind South Delta’s Madelyn Bonikowsky.

Right on Brunoro’s heels, by a mere split second, was St. Thomas More’s Milena Kalisch.

The pair were the only local runners to crack the top-10 finishes at last Saturday’s event, which went on under rainy conditions.

The top senior results came from Burnaby South’s Shea Janke, who placed 48th in senior boys with a time of 22:42, two minutes back of first, and Christina Heslop of Burnaby Central, who finished 108 in senior girls in 29:02, just under six minutes back of first.

Central’s Ryan Goudron, at 33rd, was the fleetest junior boy, with a time of 15:12.
