Burnaby’s Hanif Mawji was a finalist earlier this month at the 2019 Defi Sportif AlterGo national boccia open in Montreal’s Maurice Richard Arena.

Mawji placed second in the Boccia Canada 1 category to No. 1-ranked Eric Lefebvre, losing 4-3 in an extra round after playing to a 3-3 standstill after three ends.

His route to the final included a 12-0 victory over Chris Halpen in the semifinal. Mawji capitalized by throwing the jack ball short in the semifinal, en route to a clear victory.

The final pitted two members of Canada’s high-performance program.

Mawji, 51, has been a member of Canada’s international boccia team for the past 10 years, including representing Canada at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics, and capturing a bronze at the 2013 Americas Cup.

Boccia Canada is part of the Canadian Cerebral Palsy Sports Association.
