North, Moscrop take girls juvenile, bantam crowns

With a 7-0 run through league play as ballast, the Burnaby North Vikings continued that run right through the Burnaby-New West league playoffs last week by taking the juvenile (Grade 9) girls volleyball title with a win over Burnaby South.

The final was a match-up of favourites, as South’s lone setback during the season was a 3-1 defeat barely two weeks earlier.

The Burnaby Central Wildcats edged the Burnaby Mountain Lions in the battle for third place. All four teams advance to this week’s Fraser North zone championships.

Picking up all-star honours were Burnaby North’s Alivia Ceralvo and Kayla Zivkovic, South’s Angie Chen and Carol Ko, Central’s Daniela Testani, Mountain’s Teiya Lam, Alpha’s Katelyn Cheong, New West’s Abigail Martin and Moscrop’s Luna Huang.


Moscrop tops bantam battle

The Moscrop Panthers emerged as the No. 1 seed heading into the North Fraser zone championships, after capturing the Burnaby-New West bantam (grade 8) girls volleyball title last week.

The Panthers edged out the Burnaby North Vikings in the final, after finishing the regular season in a three-way tie for second place.

The top-two teams now play off against teams from Coquitlam and Maple Ridge districts for berths to the provincials.

Tying for third place in the B-NW playoffs was Burnaby Central and Alpha.

Earning all-star honours were Thao-Mi Ha and Olivia Wong of Moscrop, Burnaby North’s Raina Thakrar and Vanessa Woo, Central’s Ruza Kos, Alpha’s Sophia Ng, Byrne Creek’s Ruby Willier, Burnaby Mountain’s Sarah Leung, Glenbrook’s Polly Valkenborg, Fraser River’s Sienna Di Stefano, and Burnaby South’s Joy Leano.
