SFU's Alex Ogg, shown above sliding into home during a game last season at Beedie Field, was named the first Great Northwestern Athletic Conference's women's softball Player of the Week of 2020, joining fellow Burnaby Mountaineer Addy Townsend. The track star picked up her third straight GNAC honour.

Alex Ogg and Addy Townsend not only share the coincidence of studying and competing on Burnaby Mountain, but the pair of Simon Fraser University athletes are also part of this week’s Great Northwest Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week recipients.

A third-year member of the SFU women’s softball team, Ogg picked up the first GNAC Player of the Week award for women’s softball in 2020 after batting .737 at the Desert Stinger tournament in Las Vegas, where the club finished 3-2.

Ogg went 14-for-19 with five doubles, a triple, seven runs scored, a stolen base and seven runs driven in. As part of the season-opening 15-7 triumph over Minot State, the Surrey third baseman posted a 3-for-3 effort, scoring three times and driving in a pair on two doubles.

Batting lead-off against the Academy of Art, Ogg cashed in a pair of runs off a double and a triple.

Townsend made it a three-peat as the GNAC Track women’s selection, after she automatically qualified for nationals in the 800 metres event. The Coquitlam senior placed ninth at the University of Washington Invitational Indoor meet last week with a time of 2:07.74, a time that leads Div. 2 and is 21st across all college divisions. It also moves Townsend into No. 7 spot on the GNAC All-Time list in the event.
