SFU swims fast to sweep Seattle in dual meet

It was a double-win for the Simon Fraser University men’s and women’s swim teams in a dual meet with the Seattle University Redhawks on Saturday.

Simon Fraser University's Erin Lawrance captured three events on Saturday to help lead the women's team to a convincing win over the Seattle University Redhawks in a dual swim meet in the Washington State city.

It was a double-win for the Simon Fraser University men’s and women’s swim teams in a dual meet with the Seattle University Redhawks on Saturday.

The men needed all it could muster to edge the Redhawks 137-124, while the SFU women cruised to a one-sided 178-76 decision in the Seattle pool.

Burnaby Mountain alum Andrew Woinoski captured the 1000-yard freestyle event with a time of 9:38.22, edging older brother Tim by two seconds. Senior Mackenzie Hamill topped the 500-yard free event, ahead of Tim Woinoski and Burnaby’s Micah Lau, with a winning time of 4:36.90.

Adrian VanderHelm scooped up twin wins, coming first in the men’s 100-yard free and 200 individual medley.

Jayden Cole was ahead of the pack in a pair of races, winning the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events.

On the women’s side, it was a three-win day for Erin Lawrance, who edged teammate Marina Cummiskey in the 200-yard free, with a time of 1:54.05 to 1:56.05.Lawrance would also add the 200-yard breaststroke and individual medley to her totals. Jessie Gibson pulled off a pair of wins, in the 200-yard butterfly and backstroke events.

Kaleigh Sharkey broke the meet record in the 100-yard butterfly, winning in 55.90.

Kristen Olvet captured both the 1000- and 500-yard free races in 10:24.13 and 5:12.20, respectively. The former finish was a B qualifier for the NCAA championships in March. Taking the 100-yard free race was Sara Whelan.

Also picking up race wins were Matthew Fuller and Gabriel Lee, in the men’s 200-yard free and 200-yard butterfly, respectively, and Jordan Doner, Jessie Gibson and Kennedy Loewen, in the women’s 100-yard breaststroke, 200-yard butterfly, and 100-yard backstroke, respectively.

The women won both relays. The quartet of Gibson, Doner, Sharkey and Whelan came first in the 200-yard medley (1:45.93) with a meet record time, while Gibson, Olvet, Sharkey and Whelan won the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:30.74.

The men won the 400-yard freestyle relay with Rolando Hernandez, Fuller, Lee and VanderHelm breaking the meet record and winning in 3:04.26.
