It’s a groove for a reason.
Burnaby’s Jay Xu carried one hot tourney result to the next, posting back-to-back wins on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour, topping the Boston Pizza-presented Mini Tour stop in Richmond on the weekend.
The 11-year-old topped the boys 11/12 division with a single round of 75, 4-over-par and two shots ahead of Vancouver’s George Zhou.
Two birdies on the front nine secured him an even-par 35 over the first half, and helped put Xu in the driver’s seat on the 5,787-yard course. No other golfer in the division posted an even-par round.
It came on the heels of Xu’s 10-shot victory at the MJT Whistler Junior championship last week.
In the two-day tourney, Xu took a slim, one-shot advantage into the second day after opening with a 75 on the par-72 course. But over the final 18 holes, the Burnaby native broke free and fired a 2-under 70, capped by four birdies over the front nine for a 3-under 33.
He ended up winning the event by 10 strokes.
Daniel Taddei was the other Burnaby golfer making up ground in Whistler.
The 17-year-old placed fourth in the junior boys division with a two-round total of 164 (78, 86), six shots back of the winner.
In last week’s mini tour, Michael Cui wasn’t close but he was second, posting a solid 74 in boys under-8 competition. Surrey’s Jonathon Xia won with a red-hot 66.
In the girls 11/12 division, Kelly Du finished seventh, firing identical rounds of 98 over the par-73 course.
