Smoky skies: Air quality advisory renewed for Burnaby

Cooler weather may bring some relief soon.

An air quality advisory remains in effect for Metro Vancouver, as residents in Burnaby and beyond woke up to hazy, smoky skies again Monday (Aug. 28).

An air quality advisory has been renewed for Burnaby this afternoon — but a change of weather may be in the offing.

Metro Vancouver has renewed its air quality advisory for the region due to high concentrations of fine particulate matter resulting from wildfire smoke, caused by fires burning in B.C. and Washington State. A related air quality advisory for some parts of the region due to high ozone levels has been cancelled (though that advisory did not impact Burnaby).

The poor air is expected to last until there is a change in the weather, according to an Aug. 28 press release from Metro Vancouver.

That change of weather could be coming soon for Burnaby folks, according to the latest Weatherhood local forecast. Today’s high (Monday, Aug. 28) was predicted to hit 23 C, but a cooling trend is anticipated starting Tuesday, when the forecast calls for a high of just 16 C — with a small amount of rainfall to accompany it.

Wednesday is expected to reach 18 C, while Thursday could also see a high of  18 C, before temperatures begin to warm up again on Friday.

As of just before 4 p.m., Metro Vancouver’s AirMap has Burnaby’s air quality health index currenty sitting at a 4, or moderate risk, at all six of the city's monitoring stations. Smoke concentrations may continue to vary widely across the region as winds, temperatures and wildfire behaviour changes, Metro Vancouver's press release notes.

You can keep an eye on current local conditions at the AirMap website and at the Weatherhood local site.
