An east Burnaby child care centre is now the 13th local facility to offer $10-a-day spaces.
Variety Cariboo Children's Centre, and its 37 new child care spaces, is the latest to join the B.C. government's initiative to relieve parents of financial constraints and reduce fees to a maximum of $200 a month per child.
Located at 1200 Cariboo Rd., Variety is hosted by the Burnaby Association for Community Inclusion.
According to its website, the licensed group child care site aims to provide an environment "that strives for healthy and optimal growth and development for all children."
Of the 37 new spaces, the province stated, 12 will be reserved for infants and toddlers, and 25 will be for kids 2.5 years to kindergarten age.
"Affordable, $10-a-day child care will help parents balance work and family life while ensuring their kids get the best start in life," added Burnaby-Lougheed MLA Katrina Chen in the same release.
Variety Cariboo Children's Centre was one of 27 facilities to become B.C.'s newest $10-a-day child care sites in March and April.
With 13 in Burnaby alone, this brings the province's grand total to more than 15,000 spaces within the ChildCareBC program. B.C. hopes to achieve 20,000 by spring 2026, a news release explained.
"Spaces in the $10 a Day ChildCareBC program reduce the average cost of child care from $1,120 a month at participating facilities (for full-time, centre-based infant care) to $200 a month, saving families approximately $920 a month per child on average."
