Burnaby's Nikkei centre hosted Tanabata, the Japanese star festival, on Thursday, July 7. People celebrate the traditional summer festival by making paper decorations and writing wishes on a colourful paper streamers.

The Wildlife Rescue Association of B.C. is hosting a series of summer programs. The latest is an insect-themed day camp, which runs Aug. 9 and 11. Participants get to eat salt-and-vinegar or barbecue-flavoured crickets.

Members of the SFU Pipe Band are hoping to snag top spot in the world championships this weekend in Glasgow, Scotland. Since the early '90s, the band has often placed in the top three spots in world competition.

Very soon a spectacular fall flowerer with many names will be available in garden centres - today it's usually called autumn crocus after its flowering time and the shape of its large, gobletshaped flowers in purplepink, mauve or white.

Summertime always offers a bountiful harvest of fresh fruit and berries - and blueberries are, by far, one of my favourites. As a matter of fact, I just finished performing a number of live cooking shows where blueberries were the main focus.
