Opinion: Burnaby’s best ribs are also the biggest batch you’ll find

Hubba, hubba - the ribs at Butcher's Block BBQ.

My partner was sitting on the couch the other night watching TV when I heard her mumble under her breath – but loud enough for me to hear – the words “I miss ribs.”

Her voice trailed off as though her will to live had been stolen from her.

That’s how much she loves ribs. That’s how much she’s missed them as she has stayed away from most restaurants during the COVID-19 pandemic.

I have been more adventurous and do have a food blog to fill so I usually eat solo, but not this time.

There were ribs to be eaten. We decided to hit up Butcher’s Block BBQ on Hastings in Burnaby Heights because they offer the best ribs in the city.

Others come close, but for the full rib experience, Butcher’s Block is da bomb – a slow-roasting paradise that hits all the right marks.

Order the full rack and you get the big ribs in the city as most other restaurants go with a smaller type of rack.

The ribs are roasted until they are literally falling off the bone and topped with a fine barbecue sauce. They lay it on light, which I like, but my partner always orders extra sauce so she can slather it on. That’s just how she rolls.

One the side comes a nice portion of baked beans, delicious corn bread and some excellent coleslaw. The slaw is really, really good because of the fresh veggies they pile into the bowl.

The pandemic sucks and we have mostly kept close to home, but now that we’re both vaccinated we’re venturing out a little more. Going out for some ribs was high on the list.

Butcher’s Block was busy on this Friday lunch, which made me happy. After so many months of restrictions, restaurants are suffering so to do a healthy lunch crowd is inspiring me.

They were also doing a banging business with food app delivery drivers rolling in one after another. Butcher’s Block ribs do travel well.

The menu is also loaded with other items, including pulled pork and brisket

But for me, it’s the ribs I’ll keep coming back and back for.
