Burnaby city councillor to rock against racism in benefit concert

Bands including D.O.A., Roots Round Up, Kárà-Kátà Afrobeat Group and Buckman Coe will play a show in Vancouver for organizations that support youth, reconciliation and anti-racism.

Burnaby city councillor Joe Keithley of legendary punk band D.O.A. fame will headline a Rock Against Racism benefit concert at the Rickshaw Theatre in Vancouver this Saturday (June 4).

The concert will also feature bands Roots Round Up, Kárà-Kátà Afrobeat Group, Buckman Coe, China Syndrome and the Asian Persuasion All Stars. Performers are donating their time for the event.

Keithley, who helped organize the first Rock Against Racism concert in Canada in the 1970s, said he was inspired by similar concerts in the U.K. that were designed to fight racism and fascists, as well as to inspire understanding through music.

“We now find ourselves in a very intolerant time around the world and here in Canada, so I thought it was once again time to use that power of music for justice and love once again,” Keithley said.

All proceeds from the event will go to local organizations that Keithley says are enabling reconciliation, compassion and helping youth.

The organizations include Nations Skate Youth, South Burnaby Metro Club, Urban Native Youth Association, Aboriginal Mother Centre Society and Kárà-Kátà Africa Village.

When: Saturday, June 4 at 7 p.m.
Where: Rickshaw Theatre (254 E Hastings St., Vancouver)
Cost: $20+, tickets available online
