What to do in Burnaby this weekend: Events July 16-17

The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra will play the 33rd annual Symphony in the Park this Saturday at Deer Lake Park.

Music will fill the air this weekend in Burnaby with two major events at Deer Lake Park. The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and Vancouver Opera will treat audiences on Saturday and Sunday respectively to music both new and old. Check out what else Burnaby has to offer below:

Symphony in the Park

Join the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra at Deer Lake for the 33rd year of Symphony in the Park. Listen to classical and modern favourites, like Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, selections from the musical West Side Story and film E.T.: Adventures on Earth.  The VSO will also play the Coast Salish Anthem. Come early at 2 p.m. for free family activities.

Opera in the Park

A new addition to Burnaby’s summer events roster, Opera in the Park by the Vancouver Opera will delight the audience with well-known classics and renditions of tunes from Bugs Bunny, The Godfather and the Simpsons. Family activities including face-painting, stilt walkers and more will begin at 1 p.m.

Benefit concert for Ukraine

On Sunday, head to Edmonds Park and Plaza to listen to band The Unmentionables and the music from the Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral’s choral group. Co-hosted by Peter Julian, MP for New Westminster-Burnaby, the Burnaby Firefighters Local 233, the New Westminster Firefighters, the Holy Eucharist Cathedral and the Burnaby Welcomes Ukraine group, proceeds will support Ukrainians fleeing the war in their country.

Brentwood Block Party

This weekend is hosting a family and kid-focused community block party in the Brentwood area. Gear up for face painting, Disney princesses and games for kids of all ages. Enjoy food trucks, local market vendors and a beer garden!

When: Saturday, July 16 and Sunday, July 17, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Avalon Trio at the Marpole Museum

Head into Vancouver to hear a local Burnaby group and its eclectic mix of popular songs ranging back to the early 1900s. There will be a small number of vendors selling food and drinks. Reminder that parking can be challenging for this event, so plan accordingly.
