Burnaby sisters invent nifty portable mask-washing system

Business start to meet a need prompted by new B.C. mask requirements

The COVID-19 pandemic has produced more problems than people can even count, from the enormous and tragic to the downright annoying.

Two Burnaby sisters say they have invented a solution to one of the more annoying problems, which is the constant washing of face masks that are now required in most indoor public spaces in B.C.

theMaskWash is a new portable mask-washing system that has hit the Canadian market and was developed by Burnaby sisters Tammy and Rosana Sablic.

“We wanted to develop a quick, hygienic and efficient way to wash our masks, without having to wait until we collect enough clothes to throw it in the wash machine,” said Tammy. “You wouldn’t want to wear dirty underwear every day and masks are essentially the same.”

theMaskWash system consists of the following components: a silicone bag - food-grade silicone, BPA free, phthalate free, sealable, dishwasher safe, temperature safe from -70 to 220; waffle-weave microfibre drying towel - made from 80% polyester/20% polyamide for ultra absorbency; and a 100% cotton drawstring carrying bag - for storage and travel.

“We saw a gap in the market and that’s why we developed theMaskWash,” says Rosana. “The silicone bag design is a mini-wash station you can use at home or take anywhere in the world. We chose silicone over plastic because it can withstand high temperatures of hot water.”
